Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi has been impeached after a resolution from the Senate. The vote to impeach Sonko came after two days of trial in the Senate, where it was overwhelmingly decided that his impeachment should be upheld.
In a gazette notice dated 18th December 2020, Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka said the Senate investigated the proposed removal from office by impeachment of Sonko after the speaker of the Nairobi City County assembly informed the Senate Speaker of the approval of the motion by the County assembly to impeach him.
He cited the charges that led to his impeachment, which include gross violation of the Constitution or any other law, abuse of office, gross misconduct and crimes under national law, “And that pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution, section 33 of the County Governments Act, 2012 and standing oder 75 of he Senate Standing Orders, on Thursday, 17th December, 2020, the Senate resolved to remove Hon. Mike Mbuvi Sonko, the governor of Nairobi City County, from office by impeachment..” read part of the notice.
