Trans Nzoia county nominated senator Catherine Mukite has condemned the proposed bill by the senate’s deputy speaker Kembi Gitura seeking to remove Nairobi County from the list of counties. The bill seeks to empower the President and a Cabinet Secretary will be in charge of the capital’s administration and the city.
Senator Mukite said the proposal will affect devolution if passed and it may encourage other leaders to present more bills to remove other counties from the counties list and this will totally derail development.
She said the structures put in place as county administrations will be messed up and added that deputy speaker Kembi Gitura should tell Kenyans clearly why he thinks Nairobi county should be removed from the list of counties.
“There are committees responsible for oversight of governors whenever they are found in financial misappropriation cases, the senator should use such committees to express his opinion instead of wanting to do away with Nairobi county,” said Mukite.
The nominated senator said she will personally vote against the bill when it is presented in the senate as its more likely to kill devolution and she defended the committees who make sure county money is well utilized for doing their correct and appropriate job.
The nominated senator said the FORD Kenya retreat should be used to bring MPs together who aren’t comfortable with how the party is being run.
