Mt. Elgon Member of Parliament John Serut has refuted claims that the Sabaot Land Defense Force (SLDF) is regrouping ahead of the 2017 general election, saying those incidences that are currently being witnessed are normal criminal occurrences. He said many residents of Mt Elgon constituency experienced a lot of challenges caused by the militia group and urged the government and residents to ensure any form of insecurity surge is terminated.
Concerning land matters, MP John Serut said the government had set aside a portion of land for residents during the second and third phase in Chepyuk, adding that the land has been unused, and some county government officials were set on grabbing it, a practice which is against the law.
MP Serut urged his competitors to carry out peaceful campaigns, saying the responsibility of deciding who will be elected as the next MP lies with the residents. On matters dealing with the doctors’ strike, he said the Labour Committee will meet soon to decide the way forward to end the crisis since many Kenyans are suffering as a result of the medics’ strike.
Serut also criticized the move by Education cabinet secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i to impose several regulations in the education sector saying with the current constitution in Kenya, he should’ve consulted stakeholders first.
