Seven injured on road accident at Matulo area
Seven people on Tuesday escaped death narrowly after they were involved in a fatal road accident at Matulo area along the Eldoret- Malaba road.
The seven were traveling in a passenger service matatu and it was on its way to Webuye from Bungoma.
Eye witness Mary Namasawa said that the driver of the psv was driving at a very high speed and swerved to avoid an oncoming vehicle that had overtaken before landing into a ditch along the road.
She said that some of the passengers who were badly injured were robbed off their valuables by the residents and goons who pretended to assist them although they saved some of them by forcing other vehicles to stop and take them to Webuye sub-county hospital for treatment.
She said that the car was ferrying five liters of illegal changaa that people took away with and some even started fighting over it instead of lending a hand to the victims adding that that may have been the reason why the driver was in a hurry and must have passed the traffic police without stopping nor they bribed them and passed successfully.
“We are wondering where the police officers are when such vehicles are over speeding on this road as this is not the first time we have had an accident at this place, we have had more than three accidents along this road and at this place for the last three weeks of which some we have had to lose lives, it’s really painful,’’ she said.
She said that the driver of the vehicle must also be checked to ensure if he has valid driving license because the accident happened because of his reckless driving.
West media established that several patients and the driver and the rest have had severe injuries and broken limbs.
The second witness said that it was bad for the rescuers to steal phones, cash and other valuables from the victims but blamed much on the police for taking too long to reach at the scene of the crime adding that they could have helped in a bigger way to bring order and stop the smuggling.
The residents have asked the H- young company that is working on the road together with the help of the county government to put bumps on the road in order to control the speed of driver so that accidents could be avoided in future.
They also urged the traffic police to up their game for being more vigilant on crack down of vehicles that are not worthy for the road and punishing heavily careless drivers.
Webuye hospital medical superintendent Wambasi Mutoro said that the victims were received with deep cuts, broken limbs and were bleeding profusely saying that the patients were being treated and two of them have been referred to Eldoret referral hospital for further treatment as the hospital lacked machine and facilities to handle them
“We have referred the two patients who were in bad state to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and Kakamega for further medication as we don’t have facilities and machine to handle the two patients who are in worst condition,” said Mr. Wambasi to in his office.
