Sham media training institutes put on notice
All institutions that offer fake media training and lack the required trainers and equipment have been put on notice.
Speaking during the closure of a three day journalists training in Kisumu county the vice executive officer of the media council of Kenya who is also the programmes manager Mr. victor Bwire said that the college inspection committee will soon carry out a crackdown in all colleges to ascertain the kind of knowledge the aspiring journalists are receiving.
“We have realized that most of these institutions lack the required equipment and their lecturers do not even have the required knowledge yet they are offering lessons on the same.” Said Bwire.

He further stated that the media council is in the process of harmonizing the syllabus to ensure that all colleges adhere to a common one since most colleges have their own syllabus that does not reflect the journalism aspect.
“Starting January next year in as most colleges begin the new semester, all colleges will be expected to stick to the harmonized syllabus and ensure that their students sit exams from the Kenya National Exams Council.” Bwire said.
Mr. Bwire said that following complaints from a section of the public over some fake journalists, the media council is working with the criminal investigation department to bring to book the said journalists.
“We have written to and presented a list of accredited journalists to all county commanders across the country to curb these incidents while we have also taken a few culprits to court for being in possession of forged press cards.” Added Mr. Bwire.
He said that the Kenya media council has already held talks with media stations to see that they ensure their staff are protected in line of duty especially as we near elections.
