Residents of Marakusi village, Lugari Sub County in Kakamega County were treated to a bizarre incident after a man secretly removed the body of his wife from the mortuary and buried it at night without informing the neighbors or his relatives.
According to his children led by James Musoga and Stephen Muhati, their mother Robai Khavai died on 27th May and they even made arrangements for her burial ceremony and brought the body home for burial on 3rd June, 2022 but the father William Chebukale stopped the burial and called police who returned the body in Chebaiywa mortuary.
“Despite all the efforts to ensure our mother is buried on 3rd June, our father opposed the move and called police officers from Turbo police station and took the body back to Chebaiywa mortuary. What’s more shocking is for him to remove the body at night and hired people who secretly buried it on Saturday night at the far end of our farm,” stated Musoga.
They said it was more shocking that the body had been buried shallowly in a 2 feet deep grave instead of the required depth of 6 feet.
Besides being buried shallowly, the grave was leveled and covered with dry sugarcane leaves raising more questions.
“We are not even sure if indeed our mother’s body is in this coffin or if it’s just an empty coffin that was buried,” said the daughters led by Naomi Aduvukha and Ruth Munai.
They added” We are more shocked by what could have transpired since after the incident our father has banned us from coming home or questioning him over the incident.”
The family is now calling on the government’s intervention to help them accord their kin a descent send off.
“Our late mother deserves better burial and not being buried secretly without involving the family. We are calling on the administration to help us before things get out of hand since our mother was a peaceful person,” Movin Madende who is the last born to the late Khavai.
Lugari OCPD Bernard Ngungu said the matter was being investigated.
