Residents of Ngavanilo village in Webuye East constituency, Bungoma County are in shock after a village elder aged 74 years, hanged himself under unclear circumstances. According to his family members led by his wife Mary Busuru, the deceased had been hypertensive for about a month after the burial of their daughter and he was under medication.
Francis Masika, who is a neighbour, said the man has been working well and passionately as a village eldest and his relationship with neighbours was good. According to the Bukusu traditions, the body of a man who has hanged himself is to be whipped and buried at night. A ritual should be done to appease the spirits so that that incident doesn’t happen again.
