A family from Lwandanyi in Sirisia Constituency has been thrown into mourning after their kin died in one hospital in Bungoma. The deceased had sustained injuries after allegedly being attacked by goons who had attended a funeral in the area.
David Manyasi, a 45-year-old man, died while undergoing treatment at the facility. His death has left his relatives in utter disbelief, as he was the sole breadwinner of the family.
His mother, Alice Nasambu, said she was informed that her son was mercilessly beaten by alleged goons affiliated with the area MP, John Waluke, as the MP was leaving the funeral where chaos had erupted among the youths.
She maintained that her son was not involved in the fracas but was innocently attacked. She has now called on the relevant authorities to take swift action.
His widow, Emily Manyasi, described her husband as a hardworking man. She said she is devastated and cannot come to terms with the loss, noting that he has left behind five children under her care.
Lwandanyi Ward MCA Tony Barasa Khaoya, who is also a family member, condemned the Sirisia MP over the incident. He claimed that the MP has repeatedly incited violence in the area but has never been held accountable.
He affirmed that the late Manyasi was a victim of brutality and revealed that another family member is also receiving treatment at Bungoma Referral Hospital. He urged the President and the Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen, to intervene.
He also appealed to the Human Rights Commission to take action and have the MP apprehended, citing multiple previous incidents involving the MP that have gone unaddressed.
In protest, the family and local residents threatened to take the body to the MP’s homestead before transporting it home, expressing widespread dissatisfaction with the MP’s leadership in Sirisia.
Efforts to reach the MP for comment were unsuccessful.
