Police in Sirisia market, Bungoma County were forced to lobby teargas canisters at residents who were protesting demanding release of their Member of Parliament John Koyi Waluke who was sentenced to 67 years in prison.
The protesters drawn from the three wards of the Constituency had gathered at the market singing songs and at one time even barricading the Chwele- Lwakhakha road hence making it hard for long distance trucks returning to Mombasa to move.
They engaged the police in a cat and mouse chase for close to two hours before the road was cleared as business returned to normalcy.
“We call upon the President to intervene in the matter and have our MP released on bond so that he can continue with his responsibilities, we have seen cases which are worse than his being dropped, he can as well be pardoned,” said a protestor
Bungoma County Assembly Members who are from the Azimio coalition were present in solidarity with the protestors led by South Kulisiru MCA Everlyne Mutiembu and West Bukusu MCA Job Mukoyandali who called upon the government to be fair saying the President has powers to order for the release of the MP.
They vowed to continue with the demonstrations on a weekly basis until their leader is released.
