Mike Sonko, the former Nairobi boss yesterday spent a night in the cells. He was this morning picked up from Muthaiga Police Station and is expected in court where he is to respond to various charges that will be brought against him.
The governor had spent his night at Muthaiga police cells and taken to the DCI for grilling. Sources say that the former governor might face seven counts inclusive robbery with violence and other assault counts.
Among the incidents the former Nairobi boss is being charged with, is one that occurred at a Kindergarten in Buruburu estate in the year 2019, where after thorough investigations by the DCI he recommended that Sonko be prosecuted over the events that had occurred after Sonko’s visit to the school.
After his arrest on Monday, Sonko was questioned in what was termed as reckless utterances about the 2017 elections after he had stated that he had evidence of how the elections were rigged and the violence that took place in which interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho was a part of. The former governor though refusd to record his statement, a situation that had him spent the night in the police cells. The efforts by his lawyers to have him freed through bail proved futile.
On January 24th this year, court documents showed that Sonko who was addressing a public rally in Dagoreti South wrongly stated published words that Kibicho has associations with individuals that are involved in grabbing of land. This led to Sonko being summoned after the PS complained of being falsely accused. He had also stated that Kibicho was the planner and also took part in the 2017 election chaos.
“I have reasons to believe that you Mike Sonko Mbuvi Gideon Kioko has some information that can assist me in my investigations,” read the summon issued by DCI head of investigations Mr John Kariuki.
Police are expected make other applications before the court today to ensure that Sonko remains in their hands as further investigations continue.
