National Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Dr. Moses Wetang’ula has called for fairness and consistency in the relationship between the Judiciary, civil society, and development partners with Parliament.
Addressing the 2024 Annual High Court Human Rights Summit in Nairobi, Wetang’ula emphasized the need to uphold the core principles of justice and impartiality within the judicial process. He urged the Judiciary to maintain a balanced approach when reviewing Bills and legal instruments, underscoring Parliament’s commitment to constitutional principles and respect for court decisions.
The Speaker highlighted ongoing legislative efforts, such as the Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2023, which aims to protect the rights of persons with disabilities. He also outlined Parliamentary Committees’ investigations into human rights violations, including concerns over the British Army Training Unit in Nanyuki and the dumping of toxic waste in northern Kenya. Wetang’ula commended the Judiciary for its consistent role in upholding the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, stressing Parliament’s commitment to cooperation and enforcement of judicial mandates.
