Starehe MP Charles Njagua has been freed on a cash bail of Kshs 500,000 after he denied incitement to violence charges against him. The Starehe MP has been in custody since Wednesday last week after his controversial remarks against foreign traders in Nairobi. He was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts twice last week and on Friday, Magistrate Sinkiyan Tobiko ordered he be held in police custody for five more days, equating to three working days excluding the weekend-Friday, Monday and Tuesday-as the probe surrounding his remarks on foreign traders continues.
The prosecution had asked for the respondent to be held for 14 days in order to complete investigations into the matter, and the Magistrate allowed the application for continued detention, however she said that time period proposed by the prosecution is too long, given that the DCI can collect or the required resources and witnesses in a shorter time span “14 days is unduly long in the circumstances because it hasn’t been shown that so far he has reached out or interfered with anyone in particular,” she said.
