Starehe MP Charles Njagua will be held in police custody for five more days, equating to three working days excluding the weekend-Friday, Monday and Tuesday-as the probe surrounding his remarks on foreign traders continues. Njagua was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on Friday morning, and the magistrate Sinkiyan Tobiko ruled that the MP be detained at the Kileleshwa police station.
The prosecution had asked for the respondent to be held for 14 days in order to complete investigations into the matter, and the magistrate allowed the application for continued detention, however she said that time period proposed by the prosecution is too long, given that the DCI can collect or the required resources and witnesses in a shorter time span “14 days is unduly long in the circumstances because it hasn’t been shown that so far he has reached out or interfered with anyone in particular,” she said. Njagua was arrested on Wednesday following his remarks and spent Wednesday and Thursday night in police custody.
