Storm rips of roofs of a school in Kabuchai
Rainstorms on Monday evening plucked off the roofs of a twin laboratory building at Our Lady of Assumption Khachonge girl’s secondary school in Kabuchai constituency in Bungoma County.
The school Principal Mrs. Temtila Nyongesa, said the estimates of the damage caused by the rains are over hundreds of thousands.
She added that the downpour and strong winds caused a lot of destruction as it pulled down trees and destroyed the school fence.
The school principal said students were lucky to have closed for the April holidays and expressed concern that if the roof is not replaced by the time the school re-opens, the practical department will have rough time.
She said the nightmare started at around five thirty in the evening on Monday when she had departed amid heavy rains.
Mrs. Nyongesa said, “As a school management we are going to have a difficult time in putting up the menses and if we cannot get the support in time the situation may get worse than what we are having now.”
The principal asked well wishers and the department of education to intervene.
The school accommodates over one thousand students and two third all of them have been affected by the incident.
She said the school has never experienced such destruction, though there have always had several heavy rains and strong winds.
“The situation has affected academic activities in the school. Learning materials were destroyed by the rain causing the management to rearrange its program before the reopening of the second term. Mrs. Nyongesa said.
“Our students reopen with examination but we have to look for a way to help the practical subjects. I appeal to the government, individuals, and organizations to come to the aid of our school and help the girls continue with their academics.” She added.
The principal expressed her disappointment that the schools facilities were destroyed in the storm and said even though painful, nobody could fight nature. Adding it was a blow to everyone majorly the government, as it has to source funds to complete its rehabilitation on time, in order not to disrupt the academic calendar keeping in mind that the KCSE candidates are preparing for the papers.
