Students of St Emmanuel Miruri secondary school in Kimilili Sub County have been forced to cut short their academic activities after fire gutted down a 94 capacity boys’ dormitory on Sunday night.
The school’s principal George Nyaranga said the fire which is suspected to have been caused by an electric fault started at around 8 pm.
He disclosed that the students lost all their property in the inferno, saying the total loss has been approximated to Kshs 4.5 million and called for the County, as well as the national government, to help them rebuild the dormitory.
“We were to officially close on 1st of August as the Ministry had given schools a period of between 28th July and 4th August and they were prepared to close school on that day, but the unfortunate happened and we had to release them early,” he said.
Mr. Nyaranga assured parents that they had prepared their candidates well for the national examination and are optimistic that the disaster will not affect the performance at the end of the year despite the fact that some students have lost their learning material.
Kimilili parliamentary candidate on a Jubilee ticket Didmus Wekesa Barasa who visited the school also called upon the County government as well as the national government to help build another dormitory for the students to enable them to continue with their studies.
He also called for a speedy investigation into the matter to ascertain the cause of the fire saying being the only dormitory in the school the students will have no other place to sleep if a quick intervention is not arrived at.
Didmus also took the opportunity to call upon parents not to panic as luckily, no student was injured in the incident and called for the County government to purchase fire brigade machines in each Sub County to counter such occurrences in future.
