Students of Friends School Khamoto in Maraka Ward, Webuye East Sub-County, have received a mentorship and support program from the Webuye Tertiary Students Association (WETSA). The initiative, aimed at promoting education, focused on career guidance and the distribution of sanitary pads to female students.
Speaking to students after the donation, WETSA leader Mr. British Brian emphasized their commitment to increasing university and tertiary enrollment across the three wards of Webuye East. He noted that the lack of sanitary pads contributes to absenteeism among girls, sometimes leading to early pregnancies as they seek financial assistance for hygiene products. “Our little support will go a long way in keeping students in school, and we plan to visit all schools in Webuye East to continue this initiative,” he stated.
Beyond the donations, the WETSA team also engaged both male and female students in mentorship sessions to encourage them to work hard in their studies. Miss Shirley Nekesa, an engineering student at Kitale National Polytechnic, encouraged girls to compete for competitive courses such as medicine and engineering. “Some students just need encouragement and advice on how to navigate the academic sphere, and because we share similar experiences, they can relate to us,” she said.

The school’s principal, Mr. Tom Kitiabi, welcomed the initiative, saying it would inspire students to aim higher. “The best way to appreciate this effort is by working even harder to achieve good grades and join institutions of higher learning,” he advised.

The students, especially the girls, expressed gratitude and promised to support each other academically to achieve the best possible results.
