Sugarcane farmers supplying cane to Nzoia Sugar Company have issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the company’s management, demanding immediate payment of their pending dues and the removal of the Managing Director, Ezron Kotut.
Speaking during a protest at the company’s premises on Wednesday, farmer Chris Simiyu said they had resorted to storming the factory to ensure their grievances are heard. He revealed that farmers who delivered cane to the mill have not received payment since July of last year.
“We are stranded as we cannot provide for our families because the money we had was used to ensure that cane is supplied at Nzoia Sugar for milling. But the company management is not appreciating our efforts,” Simiyu said.
He called on the Ministry of Agriculture to intervene and overhaul the current management, stating that the leadership has failed the farmers.
“Let the government move with speed and remove those in management positions. We are tired of them,” he said. “Schools are reopening for the second term and parents need money to facilitate their children’s education.”
Simiyu further accused the factory management of misleading workers and farmers, noting that senior officials have abandoned their responsibilities.
“As we speak today, nobody in the office gives information on when we shall get paid. That is why we have decided to stage protests so that the government can hear us,” he added.
He urged all farmers who supply cane to Nzoia Sugar to gather at the firm and demand leadership that prioritizes their welfare.
Jack Munialo, another farmer, warned that no company tractors will be allowed to transport mature cane from farms until their dues are fully settled.
The farmers’ unrest comes at a time when the government is finalizing the privatization process of Nzoia Sugar Company.
