Michael Kibet from West Pokot County and Nancy Jelagat from Elgeyo Marakwet braved Saturday morning’s cold weather conditions to win the fifteenth edition of Tegla Lourupe Peace race in the 10 kilometer race elite men and women race in West Pokot County.
In the Warriors ten kilometer race men category Luke Shatukei from West Pokot County took the first position in the ten kilometer race followed by Lokai Momaimom from Amudat Uganda and the third position was taken by Simba Ekuum from West Pokot.
In the Warriors women ten kilometer race, Rosyline Lomuria scooped the first position followed by Nachap Sunti from Uganda and the third position was taken by Dorcas Cherop from Sebei.
Kibet and Jelagat pocketed Kshs 50,000 each in the race that was held in Kapenguria.
Abel Kiplimo from Elgeyo Marakwet County finished in second position and Shadrack Kimtai from Nakuru came third.
In the women’s category, Jelagat was followed by Judy Cherono from Elgeyo Marakwet and Sheilla Chebiwot from Elgeyo Marakwet.
The race started at 8.00 am at Makutano Catholic Church and ended in Makutano town in West Pokot County, where residents turned up in large numbers with spectators lining along the Kitale–Lodwar highway. It was flagged off by Inspector General of police Joseph Boinnet, peace ambassador Tegla Lourupe and West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo
The peace race brought together various reformed warriors from different warring communities in the North Rift and its theme was building bridges and inspiring talents for peace and development.
Other guests present were West Pokot Senator Samuel Poghisio, Kapenguria MP Samuel Moroto, and West Pokot woman representative Lilian Tomitom.
