Fifteen year old Michelle Nekesa has been forced to drop out of school and rendered immobile following a strange disease that attacked her leg and she is in dire need of help.
Speaking to West Media at their home in Mirembe village of Kongoni sub location in Likuyani sub county, her family appealed to well-wishers to come to their aid and cater for their daughter’s medical expenses.
According to her father Martin Shikuku Muliro his daughter’s leg has swollen in the last seven months completely impeding her mobility.
Nekesa, a standard eight pupil at Mirembe primary school has not reported back to school since reopening three weeks ago as her parents desperately seek treatment for her.
Mr. Shikuku said his daughter’s leg started with a small boil like swelling near the knee late in March this year after schools had closed following an outbreak of Coronavirus in the country.
He said in April they took her to Likuyani sub county hospital where medics decided to remove the swelling by conducting a minor surgery.
However, he said that what was thought to be treatment turned out to worsen the situation as the leg started swelling day and night.
In May, she was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Eldoret where a second surgery was done but still there was no sign of improvement.
Samples from the wound were taken to a Nairobi laboratory but no diagnosis was made and the family was then advised just to ensure she attends a clinic regularly. He said apart from the swelling, the leg is also rotting, emitting a putrid smell.
He said the family has exhausted all their meager resources while seeking treatment but hitherto a lasting solution has not been found.
Mr. Shikuku who lives on a quarter acre piece of land is now appealing to well-wishers to come to his aid and ensure his teenage daughter is treated.
Same appeal has been given by Mirembe primary school head teacher Mrs. Cameline Munoko, who termed Nekesa as an obedient and hardworking girl.
“We really need her back in class but it is so painful how her health is deteriorating, her family is so poor and need support to have the girl treated,” said Mrs. Munoko.
