Three pupil of St. Francis Majengo primary school in Lugari Sub County sustained serious injuries following a road accident that involved an ambulance along Majengo – Mugunga road in Lumakanda location.
According to the eye witnesses the ambulance attached to Chebaiywa hospital in the neighboring Turbo sub county, Uasin Gishu county was being driven recklessly before it lost control and hit the three innocent children who were heading home after school on Thursday afternoon.
The vehicle then veered off the road before landing into a ditch.
“This vehicle was overspending, at first it almost hit a motorcyclist over there but he just escape by a whisker and then I was the next target as it descended at high speed towards me. I as well managed to escape by jumping to the opposite side of the road, unfortunately there were four children who were following me and three of them were hit and seriously injured as one escaped unhurt,” explained Ms. Mercy Andanyi.
She said when she called for help, the ambulance driver managed to break the car’s windscreen, jumped out and fled.
The children were later rescued by good Samaritans who rushed then to Lugari sub county hospital where they were admitted with fractured legs and serious head and waist injuries.
It’s alleged that the ambulance which also offers hearse services was on it’s way from Mautuma where it had conveyed a dead body.
Being a Thursday, a day when many bodies leave the funeral home, the driver was rushing to pick another body at the Kimbilio funeral home, a private owned health facility which is also attached to Chebaiywa hospital when the accident occurred.
Speaking to www.westfm.co.ke, Majengo primary school head teacher Mr. Michael Indimuli regretted the incident confirming that the three Henry Okong’o, Eugene Atianyi and and Faith Mmbone were all standard one pupils at the school.
Mr. Indimuli appealed to drivers to drive with great cautiousness especially near institutions expressing his disappointment that the driver was carelessly driving without minding the life of students from four institutions in the area.
“As you are aware we have Majengo primary and secondary schools here we also have Leaders academy and a polytechnic thus students’ and teachers’ movements are inevitable.” He said
“It’s unfortunate for someone to drive carelessly in a such busy area and more so it was lunchtime when children were out,” added Mr. Indimuli.
