Police in Matete are holding in custody three suspects after they were nabbed while transporting animals believed to have been stolen.
Confirming the incident, Chevaywa location chief Mr. Alex Goricho said the first suspect was arrested at Nambilima trading center Thursday evening transporting a lactating dairy cow Friesian type.
He said the man was approached by a ‘nyumba kumi’ official from the area who enquired if he wanted to sell the animal. After agreeing, the officer directed the suspect to the area assistant chief’s compound who pretended to be bargaining for the price of the animal and then started interrogating him.
After realizing the suspect had no any identification document and animal transportation permit the assistant chief informed the area Chief who later arrested and took the suspect to Matete police station.
Goricho said in the next incident two suspects were nabbed Friday morning transporting an in-calf Sahiwal cow.
He said upon interrogation one of the suspects confessed to have stolen the cow from his boss in Sipala village, Webuye Sub County in the neighbouring Bungoma County where he worked as a farm hand.
The two were also taken to Matete police station where they are being held as police continue with investigations before arraigning them in court.
Goricho has urged residents to be keen and report any person who will be found transporting animals without permit.
