Trans Nzoia County assembly speaker Joshua Werunga has lauded the Western region economic recovery initiative being spearheaded by Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, saying the initiative is timely.
“I call on ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Ford Kenya counterpart Moses Wetangula to back the initiative since it’s aimed at addressing
this region’s economic challenges,” said Werunga, who was speaking in Kitale.
Mudavadi and Wetangula have been accusing the Wamalwa-Oparanya team of hoodwinking residents with an economic development card to drive a certain political narrative ahead of the 2022 elections.
“Time has come when we have to embrace developmental politics, which is not focused on the next general elections but rather a longtime
solution to challenges affecting out people,” he said.
His sentiments were echoed by Sirende ward MCA Alfred Weswa who said the politics of fronting kingpins is a thing of the past since the region hasn’t reaped from the tense political temperatures.
“Focusing our efforts as a region on who should be our kingpin or spokesperson should not be more important than setting up a foundation
that creates a conducive economic environment,” said Weswa.
However, Ford Kenya MCAs accused the Devolution CS of insincerity saying their economic recovery strategy is mischievous
since it’s discriminative.
“If the leaders are pursuing a genuine course, why are they selective on the leaders brought on board to support the initiative? We know this is a 2022 political scheme,” said nominated MCA Margaret Wanjala.
