Following the heavy rains that have continued pounding parts of this country, residents from Trans Nzoia County have been forced to move to safer places because of floods.
The action was taken following the flooding of Sabwani River which broke its banks and made some people homeless as several homes were submerged in water caused by the flooded river.
Area MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi appealed to the residents who have been affected to move to safer grounds that had been allocated to them at Namanjalala shopping center.
He promised them that he was working together with other leaders to bring some assistance to the affected families.
Locals complained of having incurred great losses caused by the raging floods that has become disastrous making them loose properties.
According Susan Makasi one of the victims, the floods has made them apart from being made homeless, incure loses as their maize plantations were also destroyed.
She said she planted maize after getting a loan from One Acre Fund and she has not yet paid, appealing to the government to come to her aid as she said all her hopes has been shuttered following the floods that has affected the whole area.
Another resident Pamela Nyongesa said the education of her children has been disrupted following the floods because all the area has flooded making it a challenge for the school
going children who she fears can be swept away by the floods.
She pointed out that even the school where their children normally go for education has been affected as water has flooded the classes making it impossible for students to concentrate.
Several people have been left homeless at Sabwani, at Maridadi, Mukuyuni and Marinda close to 200 people are affected.
Residents of Maridadi refused to relocate to safer grounds saying they were not ready to move as doing so, they argued, would attract robbers who will steal the items they will leave behind.
They proposed that the Red Cross team provide some tents at the current place that they are staying vowing not to move from their present homes.
Several properties including toilets were submerged in water posing health risk as there was no safer place for them to relieve themselves because of the flooding.
MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi however disclosed that the floods affected the people because a dam that was built by the Lake Victoria basin authority as a check point for floods was tempered with by a section of locals who interfered with the outlet.
He promised that he has informed the lake basin authority over the issue and are willing to come and repair the swamp so that they control the flooding.
He appealed to other well wishers to come and offer humanitarian assistance to the affected families.
