Trans Nzoia County government has procured and distributed drugs worth Kshs 60 million to the health facilities in the County, and the County’s Health docket has called for ways to be devised to monitor how drugs are used. Speaking at the County headquarter, Governor Patrick Khaemba urged the Health Committee in the Assembly and the Health Ministry to work together to ensure the procured drugs are used well without the interference of cartels.
He said he has drafted a bill he intends to send to the County assembly that will ensure money from various hospitals in the County is placed in a special fund to be used for procurement of drugs. He said this will ensure there is a steady flow of drugs without depending on the national government’s funding.
He faulted the national government for delayed disbursement of money to Counties, rendering them inefficient in service delivery. He said the delayed funding has led to his special fund idea, and that the health sector requires a lot of money. The Trans Nzoia Governor urged the public to report those in the Health Ministry who are involved in corruption, including stealing drugs, “I call upon the public to furnish my office with relevant information pertaining health officials colluding with cartels so that I can take action against them,” he said.
Among the leaders who attended the function were Health CEC Claire
Namenge, Finance CEC Boniface Wanyonyi, the County assembly Health committee chair/Sitatunga MCA Daniel Kaburu among others.
