Police in Kitale are holding a suspect who was arraigned in Court for defiling a 15-year-old girl at Kobos area, Kwanza in Trans Nzoia County. Confirming the arrest as well as his presentation in Court, Trans Nzoia County police commander Ayub Gitonga said the suspect was arrested on Sunday after several months of evading security officers. The defiled minor has already given birth at the Kitale County hosputal and is in stable condition.
The 22-year-old suspect, Abraham Mengo is believed to have committed the crime during the months of August and September last year and he later ran away from his residence. The police commander issued a stern warning to those who are still defiling minors, stating that security officers won’t tolerate the heinous crime. “Several men have been engaging in this beastly behavior in the County, we shall not relent in seeing that justice prevails, the culprits are apprehended and face the law.”
Gitonga however warned parents who instead of reporting defilement cases to the relevant authorities go ahead and see out of court settlements with the perpetrators.
He elaborated several incidences where parents have used defilement cases in order to receive money, negotiating for the highest offer on the table.
He said during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic season officers are vigilant and won’t let defilement cases slip through the net, adding that they will no longer issue bond to the culprits and whoever will be arrested will directly be arraigned in court. He said some of the mechanisms put in place to nab the perpetrators include working with Nyumba Kumi officials, village administrators including chiefs and church officials to report defilement culprits.
