The number of registered voters in Trans Nzoia County is still low, with the number falling short of the targeted 105,638 people. So far, the number of newly registered voters stands at 37,138 which translates to 35.2%, which is still very low according to County Commissioner Ann Gakuria.
The County Commissioner noted that one persistent problem experienced during the registration exercise has been registration of people who are frequently migrating with their animals in search of pasture and water as a result of the drought being experienced in various parts of the country, especially the Pokot community.
Another issue involves identity cards, as various residents haven’t acquired their IDs yet to enable them to register. She, however, said efficient registration of residents who already have IDs has helped increase the tally of registered voters.
She noted there needs to be more security for the registration clerks, who report to work early in the morning and leave the stations late in the evening.
