Residents of Trans Nzoia County have been urged to volunteer
information concerning any person suspected to be a threat in the community.
Speaking at Namanjalala in Kwanza Sub County, Trans Nzoia County commissioner said that the County is at the risk of a terror attack due to the fact that it’s a border County.
He said volunteering information will enable the security team to act faster
to prevent attacks.
He gave an example of recent arrest of two Britons from a Kitale hotel
who had stayed in the hotel with expired visas.
The County commissioner explained that the two Britons were staying in
the hotel paying all their bills but were only getting out late in the
evening.
He said they had hired a rental house belonging to one of the
residents from the County and paying him Kshs 800,000 per week as
well as buying for him a mansion worth Kshs 25 million at Lavington in
Nairobi. “These two suspects have been roaming in Kitale town and their place of operation was in a certain hotel in the town yet their intentions were unknown,” said Ojwang.
He asked hotel managers to be wary of their customers that he said are
using hotels as hideouts as well as plan evils to the country urging
them to report any suspected individuals to security officers for
action to be taken.
Ojwang’ said the two were arrested and had been taken to Nairobi for
interrogation.
The County commissioner noted that the county has formed a County
engagement forum for prevention and countering violent extremism as a
measure to tame any threats or acts of terrorism.
The committee which consists of various stakeholders will be tasked
with coming up with a plan on how to manage and deal with any threats and terrorism and radicalization in the county.
He also asked the County government to join hands in improving educations standards in the county. He decried that the majority of those who sat for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) failed.
