Kabuchai constituency Member of Parliament James Mukwe has launched an exercise in which over ten thousand tree seedlings would be planted at selected schools in the region.
Speaking during launch at Marobo girls’ secondary school in his constituency the MP said he is going to increase CDF allocation to facilitate the 10% tree cover in the region.
The MP said that the exercise would help reduce the impact of climate change and the tress would serve as wind breakers and beautify and protect the environment.
“The ruining of forests has exposed people to suffering and death during the El Niño rains, due to forest degradation, people are being displaced as a result of flooding and landslides recently some school had their roofs ripped off,” the MP said.
The MP called for planting and taking care of trees, as the natural cover of the earth’s land surface.
He stressed that apart from the environmental benefits, there was a lot of income to be generated from the trees, which, he said, would help the beneficiary schools to undertake their own development projects, rather than wait on the government and other well wishers.
He encouraged the students and school authorities to put in place proper monitoring systems to ensure that the trees were taken good care of to steer the national vision 2030 on environment.
He urged the committee on the budget in the national assembly to increase the funds to easy the exercise.
He also urged other legislatures to fully support it since they had the collective responsibility of protecting the country’s environments.
Noting that his area has a forest cover of 1 per cent, though small by global standards remains a valuable natural endowment that must be managed sustainably for the benefit of the present and future generations.
Mukwe noted with appreciation that, the Kenya Forests Service had prioritized country- wide programs that support community participation in the conservation of forest resources.
Others present was the Kabuchai sub county forestry officer Francesca Wanzala who said that the launched project is aimed at providing the children and the public with the knowledge on how to achieve the ten per cent tree cover national wide.
She said the government, through her office has programmed a hundred thousand seedlings to be supplied across the constituency.
She urged the public to embrace the program as per the government.
