Two Vihiga County employees attached to the payroll department have been arrested for fraudulent activities by the detectives. According to Executive Committee Member in the Ministry of Public Service and Administration Paul Mbuni the two, and one who is still at large, engaged in statutory deductions on some employees payslips and fixed other names on the County government payroll.
He noted that the payroll system could’ve been logged in as early 3 am and one of the staff fixed the name of his wife on the payroll. Mbuni added that the alteration on the payroll system has contributed largely to the County government’s loss of money to ghost workers.
He said the two are helping the office of the Director of Criminal Investigation over the incident and the police officers are searching for the missing perpetrator.
Mbuni further warned ghost workers receiving salaries from the County government that they are soon going to be arrested and forced to return the funds. “We are going to form a committee to work on the bio-metrics of County employees then form a genuine payroll,” Mbuni said. Mbuni reiterated that his department is yet to implement staff audit report that conducted last year.
