In order to improve service delivery in health facilities across the County, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has promoted and redesignated 198 different cadres of health workers.
Speaking at the County headquarters on Monday, Lusaka also renewed the contracts of 245 medical staff working under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for a further 3 years.
He said that among the promoted and redesignated health workers include six doctors, 28 clinical officers, 118 Nurses, 4 laboratory officers and others 42.
“Those whose contracts were renewed and working under UHC include 23 clinical officers, 92 nurses, 50 community health extension workers, two community health assistants, 17 laboratory technologists, 15 Health records and information officers and others 46,” he said.
The County CEO stated that the department of Health and Sanitation in Bungoma County has a total staff of 2,754 which comprises of various cadres and working under the following terms of service.
He noted that the department has 1,576 workers on Permanent and Pensionable terms, contractual technical staff are 305, those on Universal Health Coverage are 251 and 623 casuals.
“In the health sector, human resource are an essential component in the provision of basic health services,” he said.
Lusaka stated that there is a growing recognition that human resources for health in public sector are shrinking dramatically, thereby affecting the delivery.
“As your Governor I will ensure that every citizen of Kenya residing within this County has access to quality health care,” he said.
He pointed out that the recruitment of 235 health care workers of various cadres is ongoing.
Lusaka noted that contractual technical staff will no longer work in short contracts of 3 months but will be given one year contracts by the County Public Service Board.
“Casual workers in level four hospitals will be given one year contracts instead of 3 months contract,” he confirmed.
