One person sustained serious injuries following a road accident that involved a motorbike and a vehicle that was transporting a corpse at Sikhendu trading centre along Soy–Kogo road in Likuyani Sub County.
According to one of the occupants of the vehicle Mr. Martin Sindani, they were ferrying the body of his niece in-law from Eldama ravine to Maresi village in Tongaren, Bungoma County when the incident occurred at about 3:00 pm on Friday.
He said the accident occurred after a boda boda rider who was carrying a sack of dry maize emerged from a nearby petrol station and joined the main road unexpectedly ramming into the passing vehicle.
“We were on our way from Eldama ravine transporting remains of my niece in-law who is supposed to be buried tomorrow in Maresi village but when we reached here a motorbike rider who emerged from this petrol station carelessly joined the road and hit our vehicle on the left side as we were passing,” said Mr. Sindani.
The rider identified as Wycliffe Malenya who was alleged to be drunk at the time of the incident sustained serious injuries on the head and also suffered fractured hands and legs.
He was rescued by a Good Samaritan and rushed to Likuyani sub county hospital where he treated and later transferred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Eldoret.
Residents led by area Nyumba Kumi initiative chairman Mr. Erick Mutalungu have appealed for bumps to be erected on the road to check on the speeding vehicles.
“We don’t have even a single bump on this road all the way from Soy to Kogo yet we have several trading centers along the way. I f the situation remains the same then we are going to lose many lives through accidents,” said Mutalungu.
