Vihiga gubernatorial aspirant Yusuf Chanzu has been endorsed by the International Council of Maragoli elders. Led by the Council’s coordinator Simon Muhindi, they vowed to campaign for Chanzu to clinch the seat and trounce his opponents in the coming general elections.
“As Maragoli elders, we are solidly behind Chanzu who has shown significant leadership skills as a member of parliament,” said Muhindi.
A section of Maragoli elders however in the past have endorsed area governor Moses Akaranga for the same seat.
Muhindi said Chanzu who is the current Vihiga MP will ensure that their welfare and interests are catered for if he assumes office next month.
“We want a leader who can accommodate the concerns of the residents and initiate development projects that promote the welfare of our people,” said Muhindi.
Chanzu who is vying on an ANC ticket is facing stiff competition from area Governor Moses Akaranga (PPK) and Wilberforce Ottichilo of ODM.
The elders who were meeting the aspirant in Mbale town said they took the move after the aspirant sought their support.
“Chanzu has never been tainted with corruption scandals. We want him to ensure that our County’s scarce resources are utilized for our benefit,” said Muhindi.
Chanzu expressed gratitude to the council for having trust and hope in him and said that his government will champion the interests of the locals and spearhead development projects geared towards alleviating poverty in the region.
“I will make sure the devolved funds are utilized and channelled towards prioritized sustainable projects to the advantage of our people,” promised Chanzu.
He exuded confidence that he will triumph in the August polls because of his experience and an impeccable development track record as Vihiga MP.
He added that his manifesto strongly advocates for a participatory approach in development issues that is geared towards uplifting the welfare and interest of the people.
He also promised to build a cultural library for the group to keep work of art and showcase their traditions to upcoming generations.
