Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Vihiga branch has urged teachers’ employer to expedite and release promotion letters for teachers. Addressing the media in Mbale town, the union’s Executive Secretary, Mr Nebert Isambe, cautioned Teachers Service Commission (TSC) against what he termed as a public relations exercise over promotion of teachers.
Isambe was reacting to a detailed list of 10,000 teachers under promotion that appeared in mainstream print media outlets on 23rd May 2017. “We are very keen until the affected teachers officially receive promotion letters, KUPPET will continue to treat the matter as mere rumours,” he said. The list was generated following promotion interviews that were conducted early this year.
The official accused TSC of displaying the list to the public before contacting and officially handing letters to concerned teachers. Isambe blamed TSC’s public relations office for failing to advise accordingly. “We are in an electioneering year, and we are cautioning our employer against using teachers to play a game that leads to any political divide,” warned Isambe.
He further reiterated the union’s position over the transfer of teachers from Job Group L to M. “As a union, we still hold the position teachers in Job Group L should automatically move to M, upon completion of the mandatory three years, without being subjected to promotion interviews,” stated Isambe.
