Violence against women and girls is prevalent in the world today. As the world celebrates International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 2019, today on 25th November, it’s worth remembering that women and girls go through a lot.
The 2019 theme for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape.
According to this year’s theme; Generation Equality Stands Against Rape- this theme is so ideal as rape cases have gone up across the country where young girls, women are being raped and children defiled daily and some to an extent of being killed.
Some girls are raped by known people and due to fear they opt to keep quiet. Some women too are sexually abused when searching for jobs. As the rate of unemployment is high, many youths are jostling for the few job opportunities across the county both in the government and private sector. Therefore, one may be promised to be given a chance in exchange of sex, and you realize that women find themselves in such traps knowing that she is guaranteed for the job.
In the extreme and shockingly recurring cases, women have been killed by their partners, where disagreements sometimes arise from disagreements or when the two differ and part ways, the man will be searching for the woman to take vengeance.
On the other hand, Female genital mutilation cases among girls has led to a spike in early marriages and subsequent school drop outs. These cases have caused irreparable damage to some girls and should be addressed even under the International day for elimination of violence against women.
