AIC Kosirai, Malava Boys bag volleyball trophy

AIC Kosirai Girls took advantage of the home support to beat the national champions Soweto 3-1 in the girls’ regional volleyball finals played at the Eldoret Polytechnique. Kosirai won the opening set 25-22 but the Soweto girls, coached by national coach Japheth Munala, recovered well to win the second  set 25-22.

Kosirai, however, pulled away easily in the final two sets to bag the regional crown with the help of brilliant performances by team captain Nelly Chepchumba. They won the third set 25-16 before sealing the match with another strong performance of 25-16 in the winning set. In the third and 4th playoffs, Lugulu ensured Kenya swept the podium with a 3-2 (25-23, 25-11, 24-26, 25-11, 15-10) win over Rwanda’s Indagaburezi.

Malava Boys beat Apapen of Rwanda 3-0 to lift the men trophy. Malava, who lost 3-2 to Rwanda’s Rusumo in the final in Huye last year, were dominant in the encounter staged at the Eldoret Polytechnic.

The Kenyans saw off Apapen 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) to send the partisan crowd into a frenzy in Eldoret. The victory restored Kenyan spirits after national champions Cheptil High School failed to advance to the final. Malava coach Shadrack Tovoko said they have fought hard to win the title and God stood by their side. Rusumo, the 2015 champions, finished third after flooring Cheptil High 3-2 in the play-off
