With the Teachers Service Commission having set up new regulations to govern teachers in schools the Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association in Bungoma County has come out to support the regulations saying it will help streamline the education sector. The Vice Chairman of the association Patrick Wandili says having the principals stay in school most of the time to ensure the curriculum is implemented will ensure the syllabus is covered on time.
Wandili who is also the principal of St. Luke’s Kimilili boys high school added that having the games strictly played during weekends is a well-versed regulation saying it was disturbing to have the students participating in games during the weekdays and it would be hard for them adapt to the learning system.
However, he expressed his concern over the time of worship for different religions saying those who belong to the Seventh Day Adventists would wish to be allowed to worship on Saturdays same to Muslims on Fridays and other Christians on Sundays saying the regulation would have also provided for the same.
Regarding the change of curriculum from 8-4-4 to 2-6-6-3 Mr. Wandili said it will be highly embraced considering the timelines the children will spend in primary and high school saying it will offer the teachers an ample time to offer guidance to them.
He also said the system has been embraced in other countries of the world saying changing the curriculum in the country would also help improve the education sector as the students will have to concentrate on their areas of strength from the onset.
However, he called for the ministry to ensure sensitization is carried out before its implementation so as to have all the stakeholders be aware of the new system and how the transformation will be carried out in the schools.
