Water and Sanitation CS Simon Chelugui has said the government is keen to increase water coverage in Kenya from 60% to 80% within two years. He said projects have been rolled out to ensure this target is attained. Speaking to the press at the Water Ministry office in Nairobi, Chelugui said water supply is set to be boosted in several towns, coupled with sewerage works in different towns including Marsabit, Kapenguria and Mandera.
CS Chelugui said the state will receive some financial help from the African Development Bank to complete the projects, adding that sufficient jobs will be created, “The population that is going to be covered is about 1.3 million people and we are going to create 15,000 jobs once the programs are complete,” he said.
He further said the last mile connectivity programs will also be rolled out in various towns including Garissa, Eldoret, Isiolo, Kabarnet and Oyugis, adding that in some places, the intended project contracts have already been signed. He said a follow up on the projects will be done and they’ll be rolled out in the main towns of the 47 Counties countrywide.
