In a bid to strengthen the relationship between the judiciary and the public, Webuye Law Court on Friday hosted an enlightening session for local residents. Led by Resident Magistrate Mrs. Viola Yator, the event aimed to educate the community on legal rights, court proceedings, and the importance of mediation in resolving disputes.
Mrs. Yator highlighted that many cases could be effectively addressed through mediation, which helps reduce court backlogs, foster unity, and lower legal costs. “Mediation can offer a solution for family disputes and other issues, saving time and money,” she explained. She also emphasized that residents are entitled to government legal representation if they cannot afford a lawyer, a right many are unaware of.
The gathering provided an opportunity for the public to ask questions and raise concerns. Some attendees voiced issues about police harassment and misconduct, with Webuye Base Commander Idris Halkano urging residents to report such incidents to the OCS for appropriate action. He assured the public that the current police force is much more approachable and friendly compared to the past.

Concerns about advocates abandoning cases were also addressed, with Reuben Wegesa, Vice Chairman of the Law Society of Kenya’s Bungoma chapter, reassuring the public that such instances are rare.

He advised clients facing such issues to seek assistance from the Attorney General’s office and encouraged everyone to honor agreements made with their lawyers to avoid misunderstandings.
