Saboti Sub County IEBC coordinator Martin Wekesa has decried the low voter turnout witnessed in several polling stations in the Sub County. The coordinator has urged voters to come out in large numbers to register, citing that there won’t be another exercise.
“I’ve been moving around to see how the exercise is being conducted and am disappointed to tell you that the turnout is low,” he said “The public need to know that there won’t be another exercise this year,” said Wekesa.
He urged politicians to help in mobilizing the electorate to turn up and register in order to make the exercise a success.
Wekesa said most politicians normally keep off and do nothing when it comes to encouraging people to register, but once they lose in the elections, they start accusing other and making complaints that demean IEBC.
“I urge politicians to be in the forefront in mobilizing their supporters to register in order for them to take part in the democratic process of voting for their preferred candidates during the coming general elections,” said Wekesa.
The coordinator assured residents that there are enough BVR kits to carry out the exercise in centres where there are many people, unlike the last exercise where he said there were less BVR Kits in several centres.
He assured those wanting to transfer their voting stations to do so only at constituency offices where they will be served by the clerks at their constituency offices, saying it’s only at the constituency level that they will be allowed to do so and not at ward level.
He urged youths to turn up in large numbers and register as voters claiming several youths in the past haven’t taken the initiative seriously, and some haven’t collected their identification cards. He disclosed that for one to qualify for registration he must have an identification card for the exercise and appealed for the youths to take this opportunity to register as voters and vote in the coming elections as it’s their democratic right.
