Well wisher helps construct toilets in school
Sirende Blessing Primary School in Likuyani Sub County has survived closure threat that was occasioned by deplorable sanitation standards after a Samaritan stepped in and constructed toilets for pupils.
Addressing teachers and pupils when he officially handed the facilities to the school, Mr. Deberious Wafula Shikuku, Eldoret based businessman, said he took the initiative of funding the project to not only avert imminent closure of the institution, but also improve
learning environment around it.
“It was disturbing to watch more than 400 pupils and 10 teachers cue behind the only available substandard toilet structure,” noted Shikuku who cited lack of adequate classrooms, desks and stationery among other key challenges faced by the school.

“This sorry state of affairs has immensely contributed to the growing cases of pupils who have been infested by jiggers at the school,” the businessman told journalists at sidelines of the occasion.

He hailed the Education Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i’s recent directive to all county directors of education requiring them to map out schools affected by the jigger menace to enable the government take appropriate action.
During the ceremony, Shikuku gave geometrical sets to all standard seven pupils in the school and made a pledge of 20 desks for the school, besides helping its management to build extra classrooms.
On his part, the school’s Head Teacher, Mr. Peter Indumwa expressed appreciation over Shikuku’s gesture, but at the same time appealed to stakeholders and other well-wishers to come to the aid of his school, saying it was currently grappling with several challenges.
At beginning of this term, the public health department had served the school with a closure notice following lack of sufficient toilets to cater for the growing number of pupil population.
