The County government of West Pokot has flagged off 381 tonnes (381,000 kgs) of certified maize seeds at Makutano Stadium in Kapenguria in order to mitigate residents from hunger.
The seeds will be distributed to farmers across all the 20 wards and will cover approximately 88, 100 acres for the next planting season.
Speaking while flagging off the maize seeds to various wards, West Pokot County governor John Lonyangapuo said drought affected the County last year as farmers experienced 85 percent crop failure which resulted to food shortage.
He noted that he will continue supporting farmers across the county and politicians will not deter his efforts of supporting locals and implementing his manifesto.
Lonyangapuo said although the maize seeds will not be sufficient to all the farmers but the most vulnerable will benefit from the distribution exercise.
Lonyangapuo hit out on some of the politicians who are after pin pointing mistakes in his leadership yet themselves in their leadership capacity have no track record in implementing projects.
Lonyangapuo who took a swipe over his deputy governor Nicholas Atudonyang bid for vying for governor’s position saying that he will beat him during first round of politics.
“I know how to play meticulous game of politics I welcome him but I pity him, he is already sweating.” He said
He noted that he is well conversant with politics and he is not afraid of his deputy governor.
Lonyangapuo prayed for long rains to enable the crops flourish and result to bumper harvest.
“We pray for rains and economic boost. God should see us through during this electioneering year.” He said.
