West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo welcomed two Cuban doctors who will be stationed at Kapenguria County Referral Hospital. The Governor said arrangments are being made to avail interpreters who would help them understand the patients better.
The Cuban doctors, an orthopaedic surgeon and a consultant physician, will commence their work at the County Referral Hospital on Monday, adding that houses were allocated for them at the hospital staff quarters two days ago.
Governor Lonyangapuo termed the arrival of the Cuban doctors as a new dawn for the health sector in the County, “They will provide a boost to the health sector,” he said. He lauded the national government’s move, adding that the move will reinforce quality expertise and reduce referral cases, “Referral cases will reduce and subsequently the costs will go down,” he said.
Although they’ll be based at Kapenguria referral hospital, they’ll be moving to Sub County hospitals when needed, and the Governor said medical officers in the County will greatly benefit from their expertise as they interact with them in the line of duty, “The doctors came at a very important time when the County is trying to revamp the health sector in the region,” he said.
