The proposal by a section of Pokot leaders to establish a regional political party appears not to be well received by Deputy President William Ruto’s allies who have instead embarked on popularizing the New United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the region.
This comes after a section of County leaders are rooting for a region’s party to use in 2022.
The leaders have plans to form a new Pochon Party which they say they will use as their political vehicle in 2022 general elections.
The move is likely to affect the dominance of Kanu, Jubilee and UDA parties in the region.
However other leaders, mostly elected members of parliament allied to DP William Ruto and those supporting Kanu Chairman Gideon Moi are opposed to the move to form a regional party.
In the last general elections, Jubilee and Kanu took most seats in the County.
Led by Kacheliba Member of Parliament Mark Lomunokol, the politicians have started drumming up support for the new United Democratic Alliance party [UDA] linked to Deputy President William Ruto asking residents to join the party.
The legislator was optimistic that UDA will capture all seats from the Governor, Senator, Mps, Women representative and ward representatives in the County.
“This is the party to watch in 2022.We want to build and strengthen the party,” he said.
Lomunokol who was elected on the Party of Development Reforms [PDR] which was changed to UDA Party vowed to popularize the party in the area asking locals to accept the new party that will lead the region to be in the next government come 2022.
The Mp who spoke in his constituency asked residents to join in the new party as they usher in the next general elections.
“The next Country’s leadership will come from this party,” he said.
Lomukonol who was appointed in the National UDA Party steering committee noted that they have started planning the people meeting and soon will kick off in the whole County.
“Soon we shall conduct elections for party officials. UDA has the needs of Pokots and Kenyans at heart,” said Mr Lomunokol.
Lomunokol who dismissed their opponents cited that the new UDA party is going to unite Kenyans since many small parties are always inclined to tribal lines which are divisive. “We will give UDA 99 % votes .We have hope that UDA will bring change in the Country ,” he said.
He said that the UDA party has the national outlook hence called on Kenyans to have unity.
Mr Lomunokol who welcomed any formation said that Deputy President William Ruto and, Fomer Prime Minister Raila Odinga Raila have the final say over the proposed coalition.
Former Nominated ward Representative Teresa Lokichu noted that she has mobilized more than 200 women in the County under the banner of Dr Ruto Women Movement Link.
“Party is someones choice. Many people in Pokot are in UDA. Those in the Pochon Party also have a right, but for us we shall go where we get support. We want the government for development to be realized in the region,” said.
Mrs Lokichu hit out at other political parties which have been giving false promises to the residents and after winning they sideline them.
“We have so many projects that are still pending yet we claim that we are in Government. We have decided Pokot is for UDA and 2022 we are with Dr. William Ruto,” she said.
