Residents in West Pokot County have initiated a process of collecting signatures to recall Senate majority leader Samuel Poghisio who is also the West Pokot Senator, accusing him of failing in his duties.
Led by the Pokot Council of elders and women leaders in the County, they noted that the Senator has not been discharging his duties effectively as he has been absent from the County.
They noted that they are doing this according to the constitution, faulting the Senator of misusing his powers.
The elders have also called for the resignation of the County Assembly speaker Catherine Mukenyang and the absentee Deputy Governor Dr Nicholas Atudonyang whom they accused of being the masterminds behind the expulsion of the four KANU MCAs by the independence party.
At a press conference in Kapenguria, the elders led by their Secretary Solomon Mukenion said that they have already collected more than 60,000 signatures for the recall petition.
According to Mr. Dennis Kapchok aka Mulmulwas, he noted that the Senate majority leader seat is not helping Pokot residents.
“Poghisio is not like Murkomen who made sure people benefitted from the Senate majority leader’s seat. He does not come home and he is not in touch with the electorate. We rarely see Poghisio in the County doing any development,” said Kapchok.
Ms. Jane Longronyang said that after seven days they will forward the signatures and take them to the IEBC.
“Mr Poghisio is behind the expulsion of MCAs, disruptions and frustrating the County assembly. We want him to resign for betraying the Pokot Community.”
However, Poghisio dismissed the process, faulting the elders for being used by some politicians in the County.
He dared them to proceed with their plans adding that he will not be shaken by those politicians who are not ready to take the community forward.
“Governor Lonyangapuo claims that he carried me in the last polls yet I garnered more votes than him. I’m a long serving politician from the area and all of them are juniors to me. I have taught them politics, how they can be seniors to me?” posed Poghisio.
