Leaders from West Pokot County have called on the government to address historical injustices that were perpetrated against communities living in the area.
The leaders led by area Deputy Governor Dr. Nicholas Atudonyang, the leaders said that communities in the region were marginalized and faced injustices yet no one has bothered to address the issues.
Speaking in Kapenguria, the leaders said most communities living in the Rift Valley have suffered during pre and post colonial period and there is a need for the government to address their grievances.
Dr. Atudonyang observed that the historical injustices aggravated hatred and animosity among communities that had border dispute for a long time.
He said the situation has greatly derailed development in the region due to lack of peaceful coexistence between warring communities.
“There are so many land injustices in this region but the government is not committed to addressing the issues, this is a big challenge to development,” said Atudonyang.
The Deputy Governor said reconciliation will only occur if historical injustices will be addressed and justice accomplished.
He called on the government to compensate those who suffered various atrocities.
He observed that it’s the obligation of the government to protect its citizen but the Kenyan government has failed to establish their constitutional rights, especially at the border with neighboring Counties.
