Despite the many challenges facing education sector in West Pokot County, the candidates have managed to shine in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), after the results were released on Monday by Education CS Amina Mohamed. The County is faced with insecurity, cattle rustling, female genital mutilation and early forced marriages among other challenges, but many students have got 300 and above marks.
Lokur Ian Pkiach of Kapenguria Town view Academy was the best KCPE candidate in the County with 430 marks. Walter Minyonga of the same school who got 426 marks. Lotee Kerry Kiptoo of Kapenguria Town view Academy got 421. Atel Lat Samuel from Makutano Central Primary got 410.
Melvin Cherop of St. Mary’s Assumption Primary who had 419 marks was the best girl in the County. She was followed closely by Mayaa Ajek Akwok from the same school with 408.
The head teacher of St. Mary’s Assumption Mr. Jackson Wanyonyi said that the school was targeting a mean score of above 350 marks in this year’s KCPE. “We thank God since we managed to attain our mean score target,” he said.
He said the school registered 31 candidates and 30 students managed to get over 300 marks. Wanyonyi attributed the results to hard work and cooperation among teachers and students.
Director of Makutano central academy Mr. Wilbert Mukhwana said that this year students in the school had done exemplary work by getting a mean score of 325. Cherop said that she wants to be a doctor when she completes he education. Samuel Atel of Makutano Central wants to be a pilot when he completes his education.
