Members of County Assembly in West Pokot County are planning to sue the government over increased motor vehicle theft in Kapenguria town accusing the security apparatus of failing in their job.
The car theft syndicate in the County has so far seen over 50 vehicles stolen in only a span of one year and yet no security personnel has shared any details about the thieves.
Nominated MCA Mr. Elijah Kaseuseu and Kapenguria MCA Maddy Polokou have faulted some security officers for colluding with thief’s to steal vehicles in the County. “We shall sue the Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i over this. The Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) should intervene.”
Before the current trend, the area used to experience high theft of motorbikes.
Speaking to the press in Kapenguria, Kaseuseu said that vehicle theft has become the order of the day, and he urged the government to intervene before the issue gets out of hand, “Close to 10 probox cars and one lorry have been stolen within a span of two months and the issue is raising tension in this area,” he said.
He gave a one-week ultimatum to the security apparatus to reveal the underlying facts of the problem. He claimed that security officers have been neglecting sensitive matters.
West Pokot County commander Jackson Tumwet said two weeks ago the County recorded a number of car thefts and they are conducting investigations to nab the thieves. He further cautioned residents against parking their cars along the highway.
