A twenty-eight-year-old mother has given birth to quadruplets at Kapenguria County Hospital in West Pokot County. Peninah Chenangat, a mother of two who hails from Karita in North Pokot Sub County has appealed for help from well-wishers and charitable organizations saying she cannot afford the upkeep of the two boys and two girls.
At birth, the babies weighed 700 grams, 830 grams, 925 grams and 1010 grams are in good health and are being taken care of.
The babies’ mother and father are casual labourers whose income is insufficient. “We never expected quadruplets. It is rare but it has happened, we’ll have to work hard to ensure they are strong and healthy until they mature,” Chenangat said.
The mother who was admitted to the hospital last Saturday said that she gave birth after nine months without having any complications. She said she sold chicken in order to go to Kapenguria hospital, which was 100 kilometres away. She thanked the hospital staff for the good maternal care they gave her.
A nursing officer at Kapenguria County hospital, Simon Konoch, said that the four will be referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital because the hospital has no pediatrician. “The children are doing well at the new-born unit. We have no specialist and they need special care,” he said.
