Youths in West Pokot County have been warned against using social media to propagate hate speech, attacking each other and insulting leaders and instead engage in peace-building and development activities. West Pokot Governor John Lonyangapuo cautioned youths in the area over being used by politicians to post wrong statements in order to spread propaganda as a means of gaining political mileage.
He said that some politicians from the region were using youths to cause violence and hatred. Speaking in Kapenguria while launching a bursary programme for university students, Governor Lonyangapuo said that many youths in the region have been engaging on social media
He also challenged youths to use social media to do business and unite communities and not use it sow seeds of hatred. He also wondered how some leaders use social media to spread inappropriate information, “I am perplexed that even senior people working in government go as far as writing nonsense on Facebook,” he said.
