Political leaders from Western region differed publicly over a proposal to create a position that will see President Uhuru Kenyatta continue serving Kenyans after his term as President expires in 2022.
Addressing mourners at Mahanga village in Lwandet ward, Lugari constituency during the burial of Mama Perita Nelima Tabu, leaders took different stands over the proposal.
Former Minister Dr. Noah Wekesa set up the debate when he supported the proposal suggesting that President Kenyatta is too young to retire from politics. “I was a minister when I was 60 years old, and now you are telling Uhuru to retire at 60 years. I am 83 years old but still active politically, and I want to tell you Uhuru is going nowhere,” he said “We must create a post that will see him continue serving the nation.”
Wekesa who intimated he has a prophetic ability, said he has in the past prophesied several events and was criticized by politicians but the things he said came to pass.
“When I prophesy something, people call me a confused old man but my prophesies have never disappointed. Therefore, I stand here to tell you that Uhuru is going nowhere, mark my words,” he affirmed.
His utterances were strongly condemned by Tongaren MP Dr. Eseli Simiyu who said President Uhuru and his Deputy President William Ruto must go home when their time expires.
“When Uhuru joined politics, he knew very well that he was still young and his failing to plan for his future doesn’t create an emergency that compels Kenyans to create a post for him, he and his deputy must go home together in 2022,” he said, “We can’t say that Uhuru is good and Ruto is bad or Uhuru is bad and Ruto is good, so that we give one of them a chance to stay in power, they are like Siamese twins and they must go home together.”
His sentiments were echoed by Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula who said Kenya’s constitution states clearly that a President is supposed to serve for a term of five years and incase he gets a second chance he serves for another five years. If he finishes his second term, his age bracket doesn’t matter because he’ll have finished his constitutional term. “It’s shocking to hear Mzee Noah saying we create a position for President Uhuru when he retires,” said Wetangula.
